2010 Course Schedule

Recreation Facility Personnel offers a variety of educational opportunities and technical skill training related to the operation of recreation facilities. Programs are designed to enhance the skills of facility operators resulting in benefits to the facility and its community. Please note that prices include GST. PRICES SUBJECT TO CHANGE.

Information on Memberships: You must be a current member to take the courses at the 'Members' price. If you have taken a course with R.F.P. within the past year, then you are probably a member depending on when you took the last course. If you've never taken a course with R.F.P., you are probably not a member. If you are unsure, you can call the Office to confirm (1-888-253-7544). Or, if you've registered as a member and are not a current member, someone from the office will contact you to notify you before processing your registration.

This course is ideal for the frontline, grass roots Arena Operator who is looking to upgrade their skills in ice facility operations. The following areas will be covered in this course: changing the blade and levelling, preventative maintenance on the resurfacer, safety concerns, proper shaving techniques, proper flooding techniques, proper use of an edger, hand edging, line repairs, board repairs, changing glass, and janitorial concerns. This is the second part to the popular Level 1 program. Students will get further into the controls of boilers and HVAC systems and how to troubleshoot problems with building mechanical. Curling Maintenance

This program is intended to train curling operators in the intricacies of curling rink operations. The Level I Operator Course is an overview of curling basics. Designed to be an 8 hour course, the program reviews the introductory aspects of curling rink operations and maintenance. Everyone involved in the day-to-day operation of curling rinks is encouraged to complete this course. Some of the key areas that will be covered are pebbling, ice maintenance, power scraping, blade care, hand scraping, propane burning, rocks, and rock care, and refrigeration plant maintenance. Custodial

The first thing your customers notice about your facility is its appearance. This course will take students through the basics of proper custodial maintenance and the importance of a clean facility. Emphasis will be on proper product usage and safety. New products will be discussed and tips and tricks of the trade. Developing a Policy & Procedure Manual

This program is designed to assist communities and community groups in developing a Policy and Procedure Manual for all types of facilities. Designed to be a one day course, participants will learn how to start the Policy & Procedure manual, what should be included, and how to keep it current. Some areas that will be covered are: facility regulations, administrative procedures, financial and staff management as well as emergency procedures, programming and scheduling. Successful candidates will receive a Developing a Policy & Procedure Facility Manual course wallet card. $258.00 $338.00
Lifecycle/Risk Management

Park and Sportsfield Operator
Level I

Participants will experience an intense day long workshop on maintenance of sportsfields and parks. Topics will include recreation and leisure use, up-dates on new information, equipment and programs for green space maintenance. Suitable clothing should be worn as candidates may spend some time outdoors viewing equipment, products and their use. Successful candidates will receive a Parks and Sportsfield Operator card. $258.00 $338.00
Park and Sportsfield Operator
Level II

The Park and Sportsfields II is a two day course that will enable the participants to be involved with hands on and in class components. Some of the key areas that will be covered are Plant Beds, Soil Tests, Dealing with Weed Control, Turf Diseases, Pruning, Composting, and Irrigation. The construction of grass greens and tee boxes and the use of Sulfur Burners will be covered as well. Vandalism and skate board parks are also hot items in the communities and will also be looked at in detail. The course is geared to all staff or management involved with outdoor facilities. Successful candidates will receive the Parks and Sportsfield Operator Level II wallet card $400.00 $480.00
Supervisory Skills for Facility Operators

This two day course is designed to give practical ideas and skills for those in supervisory roles. The main focus will be how to become a better team leader and supervisor. Participants will learn the aspects of effective leadership including managing yourself, work and situations. Participants will also learn tips to deal effectively with people and handle negative situations.
