The association is dedicated to excellence in education and to that end ensures its courses are continually reviewed and revised so that all information taught is up-to-date and relevant. Excellence in education also means the RFABC strives to ensure all courses exceed industry standards. Pool Operator Level I, II and III, Arena Ice Maker's Course (formerly Arena Operator Level I and II), Building Service Worker I and the Ice Facility Operator Course are among those quality education opportunities offered. The RFABC takes its courses into your area whenever possible. If your municipality or department needs for a specific course, or a tailor-made course, please call us to request it.

WESTERN REGIONAL MASTER TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATE
The Western Certificate is a very important step in the development of the Western provincial/territorial Associations. This will enhance the development and growth of the provincial/territorial Associations for their memberships. It will strengthen the link between the Western provincial/territorial associations and it will show we are the true leaders in educational development for our respective associations.
The files below give the information about the Western Certification program. It costs $50.00 and will ensure that the training you take here in British Columbia is recognized across Western Canada. This course is ideal for the less experienced arena operators learning their trade and is equally ideal for experienced operators wishing to upgrade their skills. Topics covered include: ice resurfacers, changing and leveling blades, operation and maintenance, preventative maintenance, ice shaving techniques, flooding techniques, the proper use of an edger, spudding by hand, repairs to arena glass and netting, basic custodial information, repairing lines and boards, and basic refrigeration theory. These are hands-on sessions in the making, marking, painting and maintaining artificial ice surfaces. Participants will require warm work clothing for the on-ice sessions. Those students who participate in the entire course and pass the written exam at the end of the course will earn an R.F.A.B.C. certification. |

NEW The course discusses the most modern methods for daily and periodic commercial carpet care, including a detailed examination of systems, chemistry, and equipment; preventative cleaning, interim cleaning, restorative cleaning, carpet protection and topical treatments, spot removal, and odour control. Students will receive a 90+ page working manual containing detailed course content, along with graphs and charts, for easy future reference. The course consists of 90% classroom instruction, including demonstrations and videos, and 10% hands-on practice. Working in an ice facility requires certified skills and abilities. This 40 hour course has been developed by RFABC and is approved by the British Columbia Safety Authority. Certification includes the completion of the 40 hour Ice Facility Operator course and exam, completion of the practicum book and passing the Safety Authority exam. The pre-requisite for the Provincial IFO Exam is IFO Course completion, 30 days work experience and 40 hours job training (i.e. Log Book). If they already have these then they may apply for the Provincial Exam anytime. The BC Safety Authority requires about 30 days notice to book an exam. The BC SAFETY Authority Website is www.safetyauthority.ca (Toll free: 1-866-566-SAFE [7233]). The course is 5 consecutive-8 hour days of classroom. Course content includes applied mathematics, safety, basic refrigeration principals, refrigeration system components, floor systems and electrical. Course participants are required to purchase a Casio fx 260 (solar) calculator for the course. This calculator is supplied by the BCSA during the provincial IFO examination. Maximum class size 20. This is a one day introductory course focusing on the design, installation and maintenance of playspaces. This course is for anyone interested in exploring the safety aspects of playspaces for children. Past participants have included: Recreation Directors, Managers and Programmers, Facility and Parks Maintenance Staff, Day Care Providers, School Board Officials, Principals, Teachers, Landscape Architects, Contractors, and Playspace Supply Companies. Topics Covered include: an overview of CSA Standard-Children's Playspaces and Equipment (Z614-07), playspace planning ,playspace equipment purchasing and installation, playspace maintenance and repair, and "Hands On" site inspection. NEW The course explores Negligence Liability and the Risk Management planning process. Students will learn the critical concept of Reasonable Standard of Care and how this impacts and guides all risk management planning efforts. By the end of the course, students will have a clear understanding of the concept of Negligence as it applies to the area of sport and recreation, and will acquire valuable risk management planning tools and the skills necessary to develop and implement a comprehensive risk management plan. Course Goal The primary goal of this online course is to increase staff awareness in the area of Negligence, Legal Liability and Risk Management, and provide participants with the knowledge and skills needed to reduce the risk of participant injury – and the potential of negligence litigation. Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to: 1. Describe and explain the key negligence liability issues facing the Recreation field today 2. Apply the ‘Reasonable Person’ test to a variety of real life scenarios, based on the concept of ‘Standard of Care’ 3. Recognize situations which have potential for injury (and litigation), and know what to do about it 4. Use the risk management planning process to develop effective Risk Management plans 5. Develop an audit checklist to use to assess the risks in your program and/or facility 6. Develop a prioritized Risk Management Action Plan based on the risks identified in your audit Course Text SportRisk: Risk Management Planning Resource by Dr. Ian McGregor. Published by McGregor & Associates (2008), this manual is included in the course fee. Course Length 4 week course is divided into two main sections: (a) Negligence Liability and (b) Risk Management. In weeks 1-2, the focus is on negligence in the recreation and sport setting. In weeks 3-4, the risk management planning process becomes the focus Course work and assignments should take approximately 5-8 hours per week. Who is Course aimed at? All Recreation professionals who need to (a) understand the basic principles of negligence and legal liability, and (b) how to apply simple risk management planning skills to their job situation. |
